Malibu High-Octane
Wide, oval shaped vase. Leggy pours of electric aqua and berry stained crackled white stretch across a sunset orange and pearlescent raw body. Golden crystallization lines the undulating rim.
Porcelain. Fully functional.
Wheel thrown and altered. Shino and glaze application.
8” h x 7” w

The vibration surrounding this vase is Risk Taking Rebel and it let me know that was its intention the moment I finished throwing it on the wheel. The horizontal throw lines that normally get smoothed out whispered, “leave me”. The perfectly round rim begged, “fold me”. The accidental gouge mark made by my thumb in the wet clay said, “scars are a badge of honor”. When it was time to glaze it commanded, “either let it run or leave me raw.”
…
The result is this form and these colors. Glazes that ran, but stopped just in the nick of time. The bright orange on the body of the clay isn’t glaze, its what is called “flashing” on raw clay. The textured pearl and its slightly smokey area on the other side is also raw clay, an effect called “carbon trapping”. This is what I hope for when I leave large areas glaze-free, particularly on porcelain. These effects are not guaranteed; they depend on the novel alchemy of the kiln.

Finally, during the firing something flew into this vase like meteor shrapnel and fused itself onto the surface, adding that final touch of devil may care.
One of a kind.
